Have you, your entire life, been told that you should do something, or you shouldn’t do something? One of the beliefs that was instilled in me at a very young age, and it came from a very good place, from my mom, is that martial arts and lifting weights absolutely was not ladylike. I was taught that it wasn’t ladylike to lift weights or do martial arts. I really grew up as a dancer, and I loved movement, and martial arts, I was fascinated with it. I wanted to do it, but I was not allowed. They wouldn’t take me to the classes.
I ended up getting into a car wreck when I was 16 years old. I had real bad whiplash, but the good thing is that the chiropractor that I went to told me that I had to lift weights, that I had to go get a personal trainer in order to fix this issue that I had. That’s when I fell in love with personal training. I was about 18 or 19 years old at that time, and I fell in love with lifting weights, absolutely loved it, and then I went and started martial arts.
But that was one of the things that I shouldn’t do it, and that’s a big belief that people have. Women, especially, think that they shouldn’t lift weights, because they’re going to get bulky. They believe all these different things about weight lifting or weight lifters, of what they normally see. People always ask me, “What’s the best exercise that you should do?” And I always tell them, “It’s the one you’re going to show up for. It’s the one that you love.” If you like to dance, then dance. If you like to do martial arts, do martial arts. If you like to lift weights, do that. I personally, now, I absolutely like lifting weights, and I love martial arts.
What are the things in your life that limited you in your belief system, that was instilled in you, that may be stopping you right now from what you believe and what you love to do? All of these different little limiting beliefs that we have about ourselves can really stop our success. And some of them can be subtle. Some of them can be right in your face, like that one was really in my face.
It just wasn’t … Women just didn’t do that, you know? Women went to college and learned how to get a husband in college. That’s what they did. It wasn’t one of the things that I wanted to do. I didn’t want to get married when I was younger. I’m married now, but I didn’t want to when I was younger. I went really against the grain with things, and that’s okay. It’s okay if you do too now.
But anyways, so my basic thing is, and what I want to get across to you is, what is holding you back? What are the things that are stopping you? What limiting beliefs do you have in your life that are stopping you right now from things that you want to do? Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn a language, or … Why aren’t you doing that if that’s what you want to do? Or maybe you wanted to learn something new, or what’s the excuse that you hear in your head for not doing something that you’ve always wanted to do? What’s your passion?
I would love to hear more from you. My name is Amy Honey, and I want you to lean on my belief in you until you believe in yourself.
